Technical Artist

At Hypersonic Laboratories we're looking for a Technical Artist to join our team.
Full-time · Remote

Who are we?

Hypersonic Labs is building HELIX, the ultimate open-world multiplayer sandbox. We are a remote-first, international team and have raised $11M from top gaming VCs.

About the role

As Technical Artist, you’ll work alongside artists and engineers to ensure assets for HELIX are easy to create, integrated well and highly performant. HELIX is built on Unreal Engine 5, and you’ll establish pipelines and best processes for asset creation both for internal artists and external creators. HELIX features large-scale open world environments, modifiable shaders and visual effects, and you’ll ensure these run as performantly as possible across all target platforms.

This is a remote position, open to candidates who are based in the UK.

What you will be doing

  • Manage the HELIX art pipeline, ensuring assets can be created and integrated fast and easily.

  • Create guidelines and benchmarking tests to ensure assets on HELIX are correctly made and performant.

  • Optimize assets for better performance, evaluating tradeoffs between quality and game performance. Where necessary, show fellow artists what you need from them in terms of asset optimization.

  • Work with artists and programmers to create performant shaders / visual effects that look great and can be used and modified liberally by our creator community.

  • Ensure our large-scale open world environments perform well across all target platforms. Making these ‘maps’ feel amazing is our top priority.

What we will need from you

  • Experience working as a Technical Artist in the games industry.

  • Proven track record of contributing high quality technical art work to games (examples greatly preferred).

  • Experience with Unreal Engine 5 essential. HELIX is built on UE5.

  • Experience with C++, Unreal Shaders and Unreal Blueprints in an AAA game creation context.

  • General experience across all areas of game art creation: 3D and 2D art, animations, UI and open world environments. We don’t expect you to be an expert in everything, but you should be able to evaluate and manage across all areas.

  • Excellent organizational and communication skills, written and verbal.

  • You enjoy working in remote teams. You thrive in an environment where everyone works flexibly online (we use Discord).

Nice to have

  • Experience optimizing open world, modern-setting AAA games greatly preferred.

  • Understanding of games-as-platforms, modding, “UGC” platforms like Roblox or Fortnite UEFN.

  • Live Ops and/or Platform experience preferred.

  • Understanding of GTA Roleplay or equivalent servers (FiveM).
