Gameplay Software Engineer

At Hypersonic Laboratories we're looking for a Gameplay Software Engineer to join our team.
Full-time · Remote

Who are we?

Hypersonic Labs is building HELIX, the ultimate open-world multiplayer sandbox. We are a remote-first, international team and have raised $11M from top gaming VC's.

About the role

As a Gameplay Software Engineer, you will help implement core gameplay systems while supporting the creation of user-generated content (UGC) through Lua scripting. You’ll work closely with Lua scripters to ensure creators can easily build and modify gameplay mechanics. Your contributions will focus on optimizing multiplayer systems and ensuring the platform can eventually be deployed on consoles.

This is a remote position, open to candidates who are based in the UK and Europe.

What You Will Be Doing

  • Develop core gameplay systems such as character movement, physics, AI, and player interaction mechanics.

  • Collaborate with Lua scripters to support UGC-driven gameplay mechanics, providing intuitive tools for creators to build their games.

  • Optimize multiplayer systems for performance and real-time synchronization, ensuring smooth gameplay across large player bases.

  • Support UGC development by creating modular systems that are easily customizable via Lua scripting, empowering creators to modify gameplay.

  • Ensure cross-platform compatibility, with a focus on supporting current-generation gaming consoles (PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S).

  • Write modular, reusable code to scale gameplay systems and support large multiplayer environments.

  • Work with the UI/UX team to create intuitive interfaces that make UGC creation and interaction easy.

  • Debug and optimize gameplay code to improve performance and reduce bottlenecks in multiplayer experiences

What We Will Need From You

  • Experience in game development, with a focus on gameplay mechanics and multiplayer systems.

  • Proficiency in Unreal Engine (preferably Unreal Engine 5), including Blueprints and C++.

  • Experience working with UGC platforms and supporting systems that allow for Lua-scripted gameplay mechanics.

  • Understanding of multiplayer networking and synchronization techniques, including client/server architecture.

  • Experience with AI, physics systems, and player interaction mechanics, including inventories or in-game economies.

  • Ability to write clean, maintainable code with a focus on performance and scalability.

  • Familiarity with console development and optimizing for current-generation gaming consoles.

Nice to have

  • Experience in performance optimization for large, open-world multiplayer environments.

  • Familiarity with role-playing mechanics, progression systems, or in-game economies.

  • Experience with cross-platform development, particularly for current-generation consoles.

  • Passion for UGC platforms and an understanding of creator-driven content on platforms such as Roblox, Minecraft or Fortnite (UEFN).
